HAIKU

WRITTEN BY HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN JAPAN

Hello, everyone. We are the first-year students at a senior high school in Japan. We are either 15 or 16 years old.We have been studying English as a foreign language. We have just read about haiku written in English in the textbook, and our teacher suggested that we should try to write English haiku in class. These are the haiku we wrote in late June, 2005, for the first time in our lives. Most of us found it difficult to write poems in a foreign language, but we hope you will enjoy reading them.

CLASS 2

Moon shining
frogs appear
chorus starts
the sky high
flying
beautiful butterfly
dark sky
a lot of rain
but summer coming soon
Now summer
very sultry
I want ice
very hot
hotter than last year
I want to eat ice.
summer is very hot
ice cream
soon melts
come soon
everybody waiting
for the summer vacation
very hot!
I want
an ice cream.
summer
every night hot
I can't sleep.
Disneyland
It is raining
But always congested
Now summer
I like baseball.
I'm very busy.
Summer sky...
Summer sea...
always lively
Blue sky
Blue sea
Black human
Last summer
I went to the river
with my friend
Fireworks bloom
Dark sky
Midsummer night
Basking in sunlight
growing up at a stretch
vigor -- a morning glory
Intense heat...
I see mirage.
But no sound.
Summer is hot.
So I want to go to sea.
Shining sea is beautiful.
It's very hot
fanning myself in class
I must not study.
The moon
nature light
my light shine
In the mountain
fallen leaves are spread wide
yellow and red everywhere I look
Fall at night
round moon
shining all
Winter
Christmas Eve
Santa will come to my house.
Today is Christmas Eve.
Mom tells me to go to bed soon,
But I won't, because I'll wait for Santa.

NOTE: As you see, the definite and indefinite articles are missing from many of the haiku listed here. Our native language, Japanese, does not have the equivalent particles, which is why the students do not use them where they are necessary. This time, however, the teacher hasn't corrected their grammatical errors on purpose, because she wants her students to try to express themselves in English without being afraid of making mistakes. Making too many corrections is sometimes discouraging. For this reason, the students' haiku are published just as they have been written.
